The unstoppable formula for naming your church ministries

Unfortunately, there is no baby name book for church ministries (at least that I know of?!). Many churches struggle with naming their different ministries, as each ministry has a distinct mission and focus, but is also a part of one church. I can't count how many times I've heard the question: should I brand all my church ministries as similar names, or give them each their own branding?

Well, I'm going to make it very simple.

My thoughts on naming ministries are that you should use this simple formula:

Church name + who the ministry serves = 🙌

So, if your church is called Riverdale Community Church, and you’re starting a new kids ministry, this is what that would look like:

Riverdale + kids = Riverdale Kids

Then, when you line up all of your ministries next to one another, you’ll have something like this:

  • Riverdale Kids
  • Riverdale Teens
  • Riverdale Students
  • Riverdale Women
  • Riverdale Men

The benefits of naming your ministries this way are twofold:

  1. You don’t have to worry about naming and renaming your ministries (they’ll never go out of style)

  2. This keeps all of your brand messaging clear and consistent, and people (especially visitors) actually know what you’re talking about when you mention them

Now, of course, there are always church politics and different opinions on this kind of topic, but that’s just my two cents. It will save you a lot of hassle to employ this formula, and it’s better for your church branding in the long run.
